A splash of history:
Quinine, the essential ingredient of tonic water, was first discovered in 17th Century South America as a cure for malaria. By the mid 19th Century quinine was traded worldwide and it was the colonial British in India who added sugar and fizzy water to make it more palatable and called it onic water\. And then someone added Gin.
The rest is history.
